What gear is best for biking in the city?
I have a mountain bike with three gears and 8 shifts. I’m entirely new to the biking scene in the city and I don’t want to purchase a fixed gear bike. I was wondering if anyone knew some general guidelines for the best gear since I often find myself pedaling relentlessly and not making much speed.

There is no such thing as just one correct gear. It all depends on terrain, (uphill, downhill or flat) wind direction and your own physical condition. Generally speaking, with the left side shifter on #2, you should start with the right shifter on #1 on flat land. If that is too easy, next time take off in #2 on the right side. Most riding I do is with the left shifter in the #2 spot. I will upshift or downshift depending on hills, wind direction, etc. For climbing hills, you may need to drop the left side into #1. For downhill, try #3 on the left side.
Whatever happens, try to keep a rhythm or cadence of 70 – 90 rpm on the crank. With the rolling hills in a nearby park, I’m shifting gears constantly.
