How can I start cross-country mountain biking?

I’m 16 years old and I looove mountain biking. I do track, so I have a lot of endurance and I have good muscles from gymnastics, which will help me a lot with my biking. I bike a lot but I just do it for fun– I’d really like to compete in a race, but I’ve never done a biking race before. How can I start? Where can I find a local race? How do I figure out what ability level I should enter in? I know track helps a lot with training for biking, but what else can I do? How do I wear my biking shorts correctly?

Just bought a pair of biking shorts, pretty sure I had the correct size for a 36 waist, but when I wear them the padding that is suppose to be between my butt and the seat ends up in my crotch area which defeats the purpose of having it there. I’ve tried pulling them way up, down and everything inbetween and the problem remains. Did I get the wrong size, or is there a special way you have to put them on? Thanks.

If you want to see how they are worn go online and search for biking pictures. In any case, the padding protects both your sit bones, your perineum area and your crotch.

As far as I know there is no science to it: put them on and go (the label usually goes in the back).

if you are in a country not covered by mapquest, try maps.google.com and select directions to be “walking” rather than “by car”. It will take highway speeds out of the the algorithm to find the best route, although it will still only account for road directions mostly (ie. dedicated bike/walking paths may not be included).

How much less calories do you burn biking as opposed to jogging?

I bike for 30 min a day so i figure that would be less calories than if I were to jog for 30 min but I despise jogging and love biking. Anyone know?

I use about 180 calories biking for 30 minutes and about 270 calories jogging for 30 minutes so I would say I spend 50% more calories jogging.

Of course, it all depends on the intensity and on your weight, especially for jogging which is a weight bearing exercise so the more you weigh, the more calories you would use.

Whatever you do, do what you like so you keep at it. Exercising can be a lot of fun if you like what you do.

What will help soreness from biking? Also what tactics do you have to take your mind of tiredness?

Due to circumstances beyond my control I can no longer get lifts into my nearest town, seven miles away. I’ve been biking to get to singing lessons and so on and pretty much any time I need to go in, but it’s literally a pain in the arse. I’m sore all over especially on my bum, and I need to bike into town again this afternoon… does anyone have any suggestions? I can’t buy a new saddle, I’m broke, and adjusting the seat is impossible for me, as the bike is old and stiff.

Also, I’m an incredibly unfit person, and biking the 14 miles there and back is very tiring and difficult for me. I imagine practise will help with that, but are there any tactics people have to ignore the tiredness, and the aching legs etc in the meantime?

The hardest answer is that more riding is going to take away the soreness. I didn’t believe it when I started commuting to work, but it was (painfully) true! Especially for your bum! The second day I rode, mine was screaming in agony in the first few miles! I had quite a few more to go and all I could think about was, “I’ve got to get to work. No if’s, and’s, or but’s…” Aside from more riding, making sure that the seat is set up properly will help to ensure there’s no other pains aside from those of just beginning to bike.

As for ignoring the tiredness and aching, I say music. I know you shouldn’t wear headphones while riding, but I do wear some and keep the volume low enough that I can hear noises on my bike (and other passing cars and riders) and there’s some songs for me that really get me pumped up! Also, reaching certain points just gets me more excited like getting home a few minutes earlier than ever before, climbing a bigger hill while feeling less like I’m dead, realizing I no longer have to get off and walk my bike anywhere! Just the little things make me feel pumped like I’m getting better!
