How do you stay lean without getting bulky when biking?

I bike every day and know that you get more bulk when biking, well at least for me because I gain muscle quite easily. Does anyone know of another exercise routine that can help counter that so I can have a more lean physique? I do yoga quite often, should I practice it more to help my muscles?

You aren’t going to gain a whole lot of bulk by biking. it’s cardio, and by nature, lots of repetitive muscle use in your legs, which promotes building strength, but not bulk.

Doing lots of cardio prevents you from bulking up because you’re burning a lot of calories, making it difficult to gain muscle mass.

Should I get a fixed gear bike or a Trek Road bike?

Im trying to decide if I should get a Trek 1.1 road bike or a really nice fixed gear bike. What are the advanteges and disadvanteges.

To be honest, I would never buy a fixed gear bike if you could help it. It really limits everything you can do with the bike. To name a few of the problems: It only has 1 spinning speed (meaning once you hit a certain speed, it is very uncomfortable to continue pedaling. Think of going down hill in first gear, feels like the chain is off the hook.), you can’t tackle hills very well, you can’t attain higher coasting speeds for group rides, etc.

My fiance and I both just recently bought Trek 1.1s. (Men’s and women’s) They are a good entry level bike that won’t break the bank, but give you a good feeling of the sport. There are several problems with the Trek 1.1 if you are speaking from an experienced rider standpoint, but you probably couldn’t tell me what they were until you knew more. (It is an aluminum fork instead of carbon fiber. A new biker can’t really tell the difference. The shifters are on the higher position so you can’t change gears down in your more aggressive stance. Again, a new biker probably wouldn’t even know you could have gears in your lower stance. Things like that.)

All in all? Trek 1.1 is a good entry level bike. If you are willing to spend a little bit more cash, you should probably get the Trek 1.2. A lot of the things I mentioned above, are “fixed” in the 1.2. However, you are spending maybe an additional $200 to get a carbon frame and better gear shifting positions. If you don’t think that is worth it as a newbie? Don’t worry about it.

The biggest thing I can tell you, is to get biker shorts. Also, learn how to ride properly before judging the comfort level of the seat. Many people will go out and ride it and say that the seat is garbage, or it is too hard, or that its cheap. They don’t understand that road bike seats aren’t meant for comfort. The padding is in the shorts, so get a good pair of shorts. Also, when cycling, you need to be in a more forward stance. The weight should be on your arms and legs, not on your tailbone/butt. Also, of course you will just have to get used to it. Your butt will be sore for a bit until you get used to it.

I was wondering say I want to go from on place to another in the city. By car driving directions, you would have to pass bridges and high ways where bikes are not allowed. How can one get directions to go from one location to another with biking directions?

if you are in a country not covered by mapquest, try maps.google.com and select directions to be “walking” rather than “by car”. It will take highway speeds out of the the algorithm to find the best route, although it will still only account for road directions mostly (ie. dedicated bike/walking paths may not be included).

What do I need to know to get into mountain biking?

I am trying to get a mountain bike for this summers use. I am looking to ride on somewhat rough trails, and I am new to buying step of getting into mountain biking. I am told that buying is something you have to take some time with and look carefully. Is it bad for mountain bike gear cables to be exposed?

I’m looking for a relatively inexpensive bike ($150-$200). Some of the bikes that I like have a section on the top of the frame where the cables that connect the shifter to the gears are exposed. Some of the cheaper bikes have 100% of these cables sheathed in rubber, while some of the more expensive ones have the ‘exposed’ area. Is this a good thing/bad thing/doesn’t matter?

That’s because the cable jackets are prone to shrink or stretch with temperature or for no good reason whatsoever and this throws off indexing.

So, for indexing shifting to work at all reliably, it is good that some of the cable is carried by the frame.

100% cable jacket is a maintenance nightmare.

As you increase the number to the maximum gear, say 21, the gearing go for a little less power and a little more speed until you get to the last one (21) which is all speed and no hill climbing power.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into mountain biking?

I want to get into mountain biking. I have always rode atv but I want to get myself into better shape now. I need advice on getting started with a bike and what gear I should buy also. I don’t want to spend a fortune on a bike (preferably $350 or less until I get started for awhile). I will mainly be doing all offroad and trail riding.

Like it was stated in a couple of previous answers, stay away from the Wal-mart type bikes. I have learned the hard way my self, you get what you pay for when it comes to mountain bikes.

If you could bump up what you want to pay for a bike just a little bit, you could probably find yourself a decent hard tail to get started out on to see if you going to like it.

Definitely get a helmet, I know they have saved my butt a few times, or should I say my skull.

A good pair of gloves is very important also, especially if you are on a longer ride. Comfort is important.

If you going to run flat pedals, you might want to consider getting shin guards. I am speaking from experience. If you are running clip-less pedals they might not be such a big issue.

Last but not least as a bonus, get a bike computer, it is cool to keep track of you miles and times. Seeing improvement makes you want to get back out there.

What to Look For When Hiring a Motorbike

Some of us have been burnt very badly when it came to returning a hire bike to the company which was so friendly to begin with. But when it comes to motorcycles for hire, you have to take into consideration the time it takes to sort out the repairs, the trips back and forth to the shop, dealer and/or detailers and also the time the bike is being repaired and is forced to be off the road. Let’s first define what excess is. Insurance Excess on your rental motorbike is what the motorcycle hirer is liable for in case something happens with the motorbike. But motorcycles are not like cars. If you were to drop a fully faired sports motorbike from a stand still position, the damage would usually be around $3,000-$8,000. And there is very little you can do about it. The fibreglass or plastic fairing must be intact for those high speeds. If there is a single crack in the fairing, the bike is deemed unsafe as the fairing rattles and snaps off other parts at higher speeds.

Frame sliders, crash bars or otherwise known as Oggy Knobs prevent cosmetic damage and are quite good when it comes to stand-still drops and/or slow wipe-outs. However, when it comes to higher speeds, the prevention is quite minimal. But even though these bars minimise the damage, they are still quite expensive themselves. For a cheap pair of crash bars you would be paying between $150 and $200 for the pair. After every drop, these would have to be replaced.

So, what counts towards the damages for the insurance excess?

1. Any scratches which cannot be buffed.
2. Any damages to the motorbike cosmetics
3. Excessive tyre wear (such as burn-outs)
4. Gear damage
5. Breach of contract

So what can you do to avoid paying excess on the insurance premium? Well, treat the bike as if it was your own. When you first take possession of the motorbike, make sure you spend some time getting used to it. Take it around the block and practice basics. Stay away from 3-point turns or U-turns until you are absolutely confident you know how the bike handles in such positions.

One of the easiest ways to drop a motorbike is whilst doing a U-Turn on the intersection. An average sports motorbike weighs from 200kg to 260kg (including the fuel). Once you lose the balance, there is no stopping it from hitting the gravel. Do not try to turn the bike on a sloping road as this will increase the chances of you dropping it.

Each and every motorbike is different. Every sports motorcycle handles differently. If you are used to riding a cruiser, please spend extra time getting used to the different riding position. All motorbikes have slightly different riding positions. It takes time to get used to the motorbike, and this time is very precious as it can save your life in the long run.

What is the proper chain tension for a fixed gear bike?

I built a fixed gear bike up, and I’m constantly asking my roommate to help me tighten up the chain. what is the right chain tension? how can you tell? is there a way to do it by yourself?

On an fixed gear you would have either track ends or horizontal dropouts on which the rear axle sits. All you need to do to get rid of that slack chain is to undo the nuts slightly and move the rear wheel back.

You don’t want the chain super taught though, as this increases friction on the drivechain, thus making it less efficient and causing it to wear at an increased rate.

There is no “right chain tension”. Too tight and you’ll get the above, too loose and the chain might try and jump off the chainring if the chainline isn’t perfect.
