My bike gears keep shifting late, and going out of gear?

I just bought a used TREK 830 mountain bike with a shimano 21 speed. It rides alright, but the only problem is somtimes when shifting (paddle shifter) it takes some gear grinding to shift into gear. Also when I stand up to pedal hard the bike goes out of gear and into another gear. How do I fix this?

It is a simple shifter cable adjustment. There is a barrel adjuster where the cable enters the rear derailleur. It will have little nubs on it and it screws in and out.

If it is shifting late going into a lower gear turn it out 1/2 turn. If the bike shifts into a higher gear when you pedal hard turn it out 1/2 turn.

If the shift is late going into a higher gear or it shifts to a lower gear under hard pedaling turn it in 1/2 turn.

When it is close to shifting correctly 1/4 turn will fine tune it.

Cleaning and lubing your shift cables will also help.

Do not adjust any of the screws on the derailleur.

Is a Fixed Gear Bike and a Road Bike Different?

A fixed gear bike may or may not be a road bike. Traditionally, most of them are, but fixed gear mtn bikes and cyclo-cross type bikes have recently become more popular and are probably more common. Fixed gear bikes were originally mainly designed for velodrome racing where braking is not as important and allowed for trackstands to be done, etc. They have now spread to the other branches of cycling. Cyclists sometimes use fixed gear bikes as an alternative method of training.

The cost is usually less, but they are generally harder to find. Your selection will be less with a fixed gear.

The difference between the two is that on a fixed gear bike, the pedals rotate at all times, even when “coasting”. To brake, one puts reverse pressure on the pedal stroke. It is possible to install normal hand-brakes as well, though most don’t come this way originally. Fixed gear track frames normally are not set up to accomodate hand brakes and don’t have the brake mounting bosses on the frame and fork..

Note that this is different than a single-speed or “coaster” type bike, that does allow you to stop pedalling, but only has one gear.

Of course, with a fixed gear bike one has only one choice of gear, so hills can be a problem.

                Motocross racers of today are valuable athletes.  The physical strains on a motocross racer’s body are unmatched.  The value of a motocross or motorcycle racer has been evident in the last 5-10 years due to the amount of 2-wheeled racers that are recruited into the four wheel ranks. A professional 2 wheeled racer is rarely over the age of thirty. On the other hand, a 4 wheel racer can still be competitive into their mid- forties and even fifties. Pro motocross racers are attractive to large auto racing teams because they already have a large following of fans as well as loyal sponsors.

                There is a long list of ex motorcycle professionals that are now competing in professional auto racing. Here are a few examples. Travis Pastrana; motocross and freestyle motocross champion now driving Rally Cars for team Subaru America. Rickey Carmichael; GOAT (Greatest of all Time) of motocross now driving full time in NASCAR  Camping World Truck Series. Many life time auto racers may find it confusing why a race team would select an ex-motocross racer with little to no 4 wheel racing experience instead of a veteran four wheel racer. It’s about the money. Top motocross racers bring sponsors with them. Whether its motocross apparel, energy drinks, champion motocross racers bring money that a hot new auto racer cannot match. Stock Car racer Eric Holmes has won the NASCAR West Regional Championship twice won countless major west coast races including NASCARS Toyota All-Star Challenge. How do I remove the rear tire on a fixed gear bike? Help please.?

I know you will most likely laugh, but I need help on removing the rear tire on my fixed gear bike. I’m new to these bikes so i don’t know much. Help me, please? If you know any videos or guides please post a link.

1. deflate the back tire
2.you loosen the two rear axle bolts till wheel is loose.
3.push the axle all the way forward so the chain is as loose as it can get
4.push the chain off of the front sprocket while moving the sprocket forward
5.get the chain off the back sprocket
6.pull the wheel off

Building a Champion Motocross Racer

Did you enjoy motorsports as a child? If you did, chances are you want your children to have the same joy you had when you were young.  Buying your child a go-kart or dirt bike before he or she starts kindergarten is more common than you may think. Champions like Ricky Carmichael and Travis Pastrana have raised the bar of success in their sport before age 18. Travis began riding at age 4, Carmichael at age 5. Many motocross sanctioning bodies and tracks have competition groups beginning at age 4!  Motocross gear for young riders is improving right along with adult dirt bike gear. Bringing motorsports into a child’s life at a young age can be a valuable learning experience that will benefit him or her throughout life.

Most beginner motocross divisions begin at age 4 on 50cc bikes.  Experienced and talented 7 year olds can begin racing between 65 and 90cc bikes at some tracks. If your child has limited experience on a dirt bike, let him or her gain a year or two on the same 50cc bike.  Some 50cc bikes are extremely fast and light weight. Another reason to save money on the bike is that someone will always spend more then you on his child’s bike. It will be a good strategy to teach your child to challenge his or her own ability early in his or her career rather than to challenge other riders. Teach the idea of “race the race track.” Even pros have to be reminded of this at times of high pressure. Share with your child his improved lap times rather than 3rd or 4th place. Show your son or daughter that the fun of racing is the entire experience not just the result. From waking up early to load the bike, to week long mechanical preparation, allows your child to participate in the entire experience. The experience of racing can build confidence and many other “big picture” skills not offered by stick and ball sports.

Is it possible to buy a 28 gear bike?

I have a 21 gear bike (3 main gears on the left and 7 smaller interval gears on the right), but my leg strength has dramatically increased using it, and as a result I always pedal on the highest gear. I would really like to go faster, is it possible to find a bike with 4 main gears on the left handlebar?

How to shift gear perfectly on a two wheeler bike?

I want to know how to shift gears perfectly on a two wheeler bike? I mean i wanted to know when is the correct time say to go from 1st to 2nd gear? I recently got a Yamaha gladiator SS 125cc. I don’t have problem with the top gears but only with 1-2 sometimes.

It takes a bit of practice before you can shift smoothly. It’s easier on some bikes than others.

Do you have a tach? Look at it and decide where to shift. Usually you go up to something like 80% of the redline. But even if you don’t have a tach you can hear where the engine sounds happiest. If it’s -screaming- and it sounds like it’s beating its little heart out, shift up. If it’s lugging (you can feel that), shift down.

Usually you use 1st gear just for starting out. As soon as you are rolling you can shift up to 2nd. You might go back to 1st to drive around a parking lot at 5 mph, or if you’re going up a really steep hill.

1st and 2nd gear have very narrow speed ranges. I mean, if you go up through the gears you might find you use 5th gear for anything over 30 mph. But 1st gear will be used up by, say, 10 mph. It has to do with the ratios. So 1t and 2nd are a little harder to use, to keep the RPMs in their proper range. But this is something else that will come with practice. The more you ride the bike, the better you’ll get at it.

Can bullhorn handlebars go on a non fixed gear bike?

I just got a ten speed vintage schwinn for riding around but it has the absolute worst handlebars. I don’t want those spiral crap bars I want some nice bullhorns but I’ve never seen them on any other bike but a fixed gear and I don’t want to convert it like some hipster would. Does anyone know if bullhorn (fixed gear) handlebars would work just fine on a non fixed gear bike?

If you have the shifters on the down tubes or the handle bar stem you can use anything you want. If the race bars are uncomfortable it is probably due to the wrong size bike.
