16 years old wants to start road biking?

hey im 16, going to be a junior in high school and i want to start biking.

i am in good shape for my age. i am 5 feet 6 inch and 135 lbs.

What bike stem degree should I use for mountain biking?

I have a Giant mountain bike that has a stem that is low. I feel like a stem that is higher would be better when riding downhill. My question is, what is the usual stem degree for mountain biking? I live by the desert and some trails are very steep.

a higher stem wont really help, a shorter one will, since when you are going downhill and you throw your body back, having a shorter stem means you wont have to reach as far. i have a Bontrager Select on my bike and i love it. i think its an 80mm, 10degree upsweep. it very comfortable and super, and only costs $25. i’ve been using if for 2 years and no problems at all. i dont do much downhill, but i use it on my XC race bike.

if you do alot of downhill, you may want to look into getting a dual crown fork with the integrated stem. they keep your front end up higher for more control and the built-in-stem angle is optimal for controlling a bike going on the steeps. if you have about $700 or $800 to burn, check ebay for a Marzocchi 888, rock shox boxxer, manitou stance kingpin (lower end, but still reliable), or maverack DUC32 (inverted fork, very light and very cool).

what is the biking equivalent to running?

im’ a marathon runner and began cross training recently by biking. i can easily bike 25 or 30 miles and feel like i haven’t done anything after i’m finished. what distance should i have to be biking to get a similar workout to my 20 mile long runs.

What do I need to know to get into mountain biking?

I am trying to get a mountain bike for this summers use. I am looking to ride on somewhat rough trails, and I am new to buying step of getting into mountain biking. I am told that buying is something you have to take some time with and look carefully. What kind of bike should I buy if I want to begin mountain biking?

I’m a teenage boy looking to start mountain biking/ freeride. I’ve ridden bikes before but I’ve never REALLY been offroad. I want a bike that is capable of going offroad and on the road. Preferably one that is not to cheap. What kind of bike should I get and where?

I agree. Check out your local bike shop. Around this time of the year you can get a great deal on 2009 bikes. I got an $880 bike for $750 about 5 weeks ago. Probably could get a better deal now that the 2010 models are out.

You can probably get a $700 bike for around $500 if you’re lucky. BUT! don’t let a shop sell you a bike just so they can get rid of it. I’m 5’8″ and I had a shop try to sell me a 19″ Kona for a really good price, but it didn’t fit. That could also happen more this time of the year.

Finally, whatever you do, TEST RIDE. Don’t buy a bike if you’ve never gotten on it.

You sound like a candidate for a hybrid. They are called that because they are a cross between a road and mountain bike. The frame is similar to a mountain bike. Wheels are the same diameter as road bikes (700C) but narrower and tires have less aggressive treads than a true mountain bike. They often have front (and maybe seat) suspension, but they will usually have mountain bike style handlebars and gears. They are well suited to city roads, bike paths and hardpack trails, but being a hybrid are less suited to long, fast road rides than a road bike or to rough/demanding trails than a mountain bike. How much less calories do you burn biking as opposed to jogging?

I bike for 30 min a day so i figure that would be less calories than if I were to jog for 30 min but I despise jogging and love biking. Anyone know?

I use about 180 calories biking for 30 minutes and about 270 calories jogging for 30 minutes so I would say I spend 50% more calories jogging.

Of course, it all depends on the intensity and on your weight, especially for jogging which is a weight bearing exercise so the more you weigh, the more calories you would use.

Whatever you do, do what you like so you keep at it. Exercising can be a lot of fun if you like what you do.

Easy to use and it fits

I could not find a bike rack from either Yakima or Thule that would attach to my two cars. So, it was with a great deal of trepidation that I ordered the Saris sight unseen. The mounting instructions were easy to understand and the rack attachs firmly to either of my two cars. Being the lazy sort, I store it in the mounting position for one of them. When I need to use it, I simply position the straps and snug them up. The straps are well made and protect the attachment points.Movement of the front wheel is minimal, but a bungee cord securing it might be advisable for long or bumpy trips.
The practical and minimalist design of this rack is outstanding. I will tell anyone who seeks my advice on a bike rack to check out Saris before looking at any of the competition.

It fit my Honda Prelude perfectly

I have a lightweight Fuji road bike and had no problems installing this rack on my 01 Honda Prelude. I do NOT have a spoiler. One reviewer stated that this rack will ruin my paint, but I must have a thousand coats of wax on my Lude and don’t expect any problems. NOTE: I took Anthony’s advice (the guy in NY with the BMW) and bought rubber tape at Lowe’s and wrapped the clips.

Awesome- sturdy, safe and easy to install

Easy to install- though initial set up may take about 20 minutes to set arm positions and figure out strap placement and length. Holds bikes secure with straps for (top tube and seat post) and allows ample adjustment possibilities to keep the bikes (and bike tires) away from the vehicle body/paint. If its rubbing- you probably don’t have the arm height adjusted right (as I found out). Fits both my 2000 Honda Prelude and 2007 Accord carrying a Bianchi road bike and a Gary Fischer MTB. I read a lot of reviews complaining about the the set screws being plastic and stripping. This brought up initial concerns about material and build quality. While I can see how it would be easy to think that these need to be gorilla tight- there is no reason to go crazy with them. The rack arms are designed so the rack does the work- the set screw just keeps the arm position from sliding around laterally. Just a little snug on the screws and a recheck every so often as you head down the road. Rack is made sturdy light weight plastic reinforced with aluminum where it counts. Well designed and easy to load. Folds up compact and stows easy in trunk (even in my tiny Prelude trunk)or in corner of the closet. Glad I spent a little bit more initially and got something that works with no headache- and if something happens there is a lifetime warranty from Saris on it. Solid rack.
