How can I start cross-country mountain biking?

I’m 16 years old and I looove mountain biking. I do track, so I have a lot of endurance and I have good muscles from gymnastics, which will help me a lot with my biking. I bike a lot but I just do it for fun– I’d really like to compete in a race, but I’ve never done a biking race before. How can I start? Where can I find a local race? How do I figure out what ability level I should enter in? I know track helps a lot with training for biking, but what else can I do? What are the benefits of biking, as opposed to jogging?

I used to jog at a track, but it is too much of a hassle to get there, so I decided to ride a bike. But I’m wondering, does anyone have any idea if riding a bike is any better or worse exercise than jogging?

To me it seems that they are both just as good as one another for your legs, and the only difference is the upper body motion that you get from jogging but not biking.

Cycling is concidered to be “low Impact” Since you are pedaling on a set sprocket it is easier on your joints. In Jogging there is a lot of jarring ground contact that can eventualy cause varrying forms of joint dammage.

Wheels are the same diameter as road bikes (700C) but narrower and tires have less aggressive treads than a true mountain bike. They are well suited to city roads, bike paths and hardpack trails, but being a hybrid are less suited to long, fast road rides than a road bike or to rough/demanding trails than a mountain bike. Typically, you should not do much weight training (or hard, slow revs on the bike) if you are a distance runner. Use a wristwatch to count the revolutions of your right foot. Seventy per minute is the minimum. Top long-distance cyclists cam easily do 120 revs per minute, but you have to work up to that over weeks of training, and it probably isn’t beneficial to your skill to go above 90 RPM.
* The movement is not the same as that of running, so it doesn’t build the same range of flexibility. Your gluts are not asked to push back in cycling like they are in running. On the other hand, your arms and shoulders get some intense isometric work without the flexing you get from swinging them during a run. Your thighs will likely increase in bulk from cycling, but your calves will not likely change. Cycling is definitely a quads-intensive activity.

If you are a weekend runner, it isn’t such a worry. You might even devote a third of your workout to cycling. If you are a serious, competitive runner, you can’t find any better way to spend 90% of your workout time than running.

The bike should be adjusted properly for best handling and range of movement. If the seat is too low, your knees will be strained. If too high, you can’t keep good balance. The distance from the seat to the handlebar stem should be such that you can keep a reasonable part of your upper body weight on your hands. Too little and you don’t have good control on bumps. Too much and you will get tired and loose feeling in your hands. Always wear cycling gloves for workouts to lessen the nerve-deadening effect and too give protection if you take a tumble. Your hands will hit the street by instinct when you fall.

How effective is mountain biking when it comes to weight loss?

I got a little heavy these last couple of years, and I am looking to work it all off. I am only a little chunky, not fat or anything, but I want the body I once had.

I go to the gym 3-4 times a week, its hard with school and work to go more than that, but I do own a nice mountain bike, and live right next to a mountain preserve, which there is MANY bike trails. It would be easier to take my bike out than drive to the gym.

But my question is, how effective is mountain biking? Is it a good form of cardio? I do weight training at the gym, usually an hour set sometimes longer. Will doing this help with fat // weight loss?

How much money should I invest in mountain biking?

I want to start mountain biking and don’t know too much about it. Should I buy and expensive bike from a bike shop or go to a retail store and buy what looks okay to ride?

I think you can look forward for a 300 to 400 hardtail (bike with only front suspension), and maybe 100 bucks in gear (helmet, gloves and maybe a camelback or backpack hidration gear).

Go to a bike shop, they know more their stuff than a retail shop. It will really make a difference. Most retail stores salesman (not all of them, but most of them, I think) will try to sell you what they have on the floor, rather than showing you a well fitting bike.

Trek, Specialized, Giant, GT makes very good entry bikes. Don’t worry too much about componentry for now. Shimano has different ‘quality’ stuff, the food chain is as follows, from lowest to most expensive: Altus, Acera, Alivio, Deore, LX, XT and XTR. It also has some stuff with numbers. Anything from Alivio and up is very workable, Altus and Acera, will do but probably you will need to upgrade in the future.

Unless you do freeriding (jumps and realy crazy stuff), V brakes are probably your best bet. Some cheap bikes have disc brakes, but probably not worth it and only will make your bike heavier.

Also, ask in the shops if they have begginer clinics and group rides. Some shops do offer them, and they’re a great way to start and learn the basic stuff. It’s better to start riding with the right bases, than trying to learn everything by yourself, and then try to correct bad habits.
