One of the most important things to purchase along with your bike is a simple tool kit. If the bike salesman doesn’t offer you one, make sure to ask for it. The first time you need to use it, you’ll be happy you bought it.

So now that you have a sturdy bicycle and a good, basic tool kit, what next? The best thing to do is to perform some routine preventive maintenance before problems come up on the ride.

Some bicycles need more maintenance than others. This also depends on your style of riding. For instance, if you occasionally ride through town, your bike won’t need as much care as if you ride a mountain bike on trails. But even so, routine checks will benefit the occasional rider as much as the die-hard mountain biker.

The things that need regular checking on a bike are very similar to what a mechanic needs to check on your car.

One of the obvious things to check on both a bike and car are brakes. When you squeeze the brakes on the handlebar of a bike, it causes the brake pads to compress over the metal frame of the wheel. It won’t cause you to stop immediately, but will slow you down enough for you to put your feet down.

So regularly make sure that your brake pads are not worn down. Replace them if they are. Also check that the pads are making contact with the metal of the wheel and not the tire itself. If they connect with the wrong part, it could cause you to stop on a dime, which will most likely result in you taking a tumble over the handlebars. Not fun.

Something else that needs to be checked regularly are the wheels. Just like in a car, air pressure in bike tires can change. So make sure you check the pressure and add more air if needed. If a tire has the incorrect amount of air pressure, it will affect your ability to stop. You could also get flats more often when you drive over obstacles because the tire could get pinched around them (this is called pinch flats).

Also keep an eye on your treads. It’s very important to have good treads and replace the tire if they are too low.

Check your seat and make sure it hasn’t become wobbly. If it has, just tighten it with a wrench from your trusty tool kit.

Make sure your bike chain is not becoming encrusted with grime. If it gets too dirty, it could impact how well it changes gears. And you don’t want shifting gears to fail at a time when you are expecting them to work properly, such as when you come to a hill.

So if your chain is becoming too dirty, clean it. The traditional way is to remove it and soak it in a container of solvent. But you can also buy an on-the-bike cleaning machine which clips on the chain and allows it to pass through brushes/solvent without removing the chain first.

Also keep an eye on your bike frame and watch for rust. A small spot of rust can quickly grow and cause weak areas on your frame. To prevent rust, try not to leave your bicycle outside in harsh weather without a waterproof cover on it.

I’m looking into building a fixed gear bike but I don’t know how to go about doing it. Is it better to convert a non-fixed gear into a fix gear or start from scratch and what should i do if i were to start form scratch.

Can you afford to buy a new fixed/track bike? Some are really reasonably priced. That would be the obvious best option to me. But then I guess you don’t get points/cred for doing your own build.

Failing that, you could go the conversion route. Just be careful what you pay for the project bike. You’ll need to buy a new rear wheel with appropriate hub…plus new cranks, bottom bracket, chain and cages (pedals). And you probably won’t like the stock bars, either. If you pay more than $100 for the project bike, you could end up spending more on the conversion than you would have spent on a new bike to begin with.

I’d rather not get mixed up in this, it very rarely ends well for all concerned. After you put the bike sprocket on the scooter, what chain did you have in mind? Because you will have to cut it to fit. And if you expect to use the BICYCLE chain, think again. There are varying sizes of chain, so you need one with the same tooth spacing as your chain sprocket, and the same width as well.

Don’t try it. If you got lucky it might work for a while, but eventually the chain will break, and it may hurt you or an innocent bystander.

Um, I would strongly suggest that you avoid any bikes with the auto-shifting feature. They are notorious for having frequent problems and if they break it is almost impossible to get parts. They are also not “rugged” and will not take much-if any- abuse.

Here’s what to do… go to a local bike shop and talk with them about an all-terrain bicycle. They start in price about $250 and are sufficient for riding on the road and offroad on groomed trails. They typically have 21 gears which are EASY to shift and are much lighter than any autobike I have ever seen. Some brands to consider are Diamondback, Raleigh, Jamis, Fuji, and KHS. In your price range, stay away from Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale.

The good thing about going to a shop is that you are actually fitted to the correct sized bike and it usually comes with a modicum of service. Don’t fall for the idea that bike shops are just for people that have big money to spend… it just isn’t true.

On an fixed gear you would have either track ends or horizontal dropouts on which the rear axle sits. All you need to do to get rid of that slack chain is to undo the nuts slightly and move the rear wheel back.

You don’t want the chain super taught though, as this increases friction on the drivechain, thus making it less efficient and causing it to wear at an increased rate.

There is no “right chain tension”. Too tight and you’ll get the above, too loose and the chain might try and jump off the chainring if the chainline isn’t perfect.

Next thing you know, you’re flying over your handle bars and sliding cheek first across the coarse dunes. It’s critical that you not get distracted, and there’s one sure-fire technique for improving your focus: take a trip to Manhattan in the summertime and walk around The Village without gazing at all the barely dressed beauties prancing around. If you can survive that challenge, Slickrock will be a cake walk.

Are You Properly Dressed For Your Motorcycle Ride

Have you ever gone to get on your motorcycle and stopped yourself for just a second and said to yourself, “Should I be wearing something a little more protective?”  Chances are the answer to that question is always, “Yes.”  The fact that you even had to ask yourself that question indicates that you’re probably not properly equipped or dressed for the ride, and that you should reconsider what you are wearing before you get out on the highway.

Your legs also need to be protected when you’re out riding your motorcycle.  A good pair of riding pants or motorcycle chaps is a great solution for protecting your legs and buttocks in the event of a fall or crash.  Riding pants or motorcycle chaps, like motorcycle jackets, are made with reinforce padding on the knees, and buttocks.  These extra padding patches are usually rigid which prevents them from bending or flexing.

Some other safety apparel items to consider are gloves, boots, and goggles (if you’re not wearing a full face helmet).  Leather motorcycle gloves will help to protect your hands in the event of a crash or fall, and they will also block the wind and cold on any trip.  Shoes are also an important piece of equipment that you should pay attention to.  I prefer to wear my steel toe boots when I ride because they offer maximum protection, especially from flying debris that may come up off of the road.  Motorcycle boots also provide excellent protection for your feet and are usually lined to provide insulation during those cooler rides.  Do not wear flip-flops, sandals, or any other type of shoe that will leave your foot exposed in any way.  Not only will these types of footwear offer no protection in the even of a crash or fall, but they also leave your feet exposed to the parts of the bike that become extremely hot when riding.  If you’re feet come in contact with any of these parts, they may be severely burned.  Goggles help protect your eyes from excess wind and cold, and any flying debris that could injury your eyes and negatively affect your vision.

Remember, it’s important to make sure that you are wearing the proper riding gear every time you get on your motorcycle.  Helmets, jackets, pants or chaps, boots, gloves, and goggles are all great pieces of equipment that will help protect you the next time you head out for that motorcycle trip.

How do you fix a bike gear?

My sister and her friend broke my bike. I don’t know how. There’s something sticking out (more like sticking downward) from the gear holding the chain on the back wheel, and that has caused the chain to loosen, making it so I can’t ride my bike. I’ve tried to push that up and back where it is supposed to go, but its not working. How can I fix it?

Motocross Apparel Ride in Style

Motocross apparel is very different from any other apparel, as it needs to give the rider the most safety along with freedom of movement. FMX riding, especially with its daring stunts, needs the rider to have free movement, but also needs sturdy protective gear, as chances of crashing and falling are extremely high. This sport is an Extreme Sport, which is why the Freestyle Motocross was introduced in the X Games in 1999.

A sport with such a high level of danger needs the riders to wear protective gear every time. Let’s look at the important motocross gear required.

Body Armour

Body armour is extremely important, as it protects the chest and torso area from impact and also from stones and rocks, especially when you’re dirt riding. This armour can be worn under the jersey and protects the lungs and ribcage from serious damage in case of impact. The only drawback, though, is that the armour gets very hot at times and there is reduced ventilation.

Helmet

Helmets are the most important protective gear any motocross rider has to wear. Many times after a fall, many riders have been saved from a fatal situation only because of their helmets. Agreed, helmets are a bit cumbersome, but a little discomfort is nothing in comparison to a safe life. Some riders even wear neck braces when performing extremely dangerous stunts.

Face Shields

Face shields protect your face from dirt and stones, as you will be riding at very high speeds. Some features:

They protect your eyes and face. They are sometimes attached to the helmet or they can be flipped on and off the helmet and face. Shields should be scratch resistant and impact resistant. Scratched surfaces can blur your vision and the shield should not crack in case of an impact. Tinted face shields during the day are a good idea, but you will require clear glass shields in the night.

Goggles

If you are blinded mid race because of flying debris or mud, then this can be very dangerous, not only for you but for your fellow riders as well. Some features:

Goggles provide protection for your eyes. Goggles should be clear for night riding and can be tinted for the day. Goggles could block peripheral vision, that is, vision to the sides. Goggles should always be worn over the helmet and should be securely tightened.

Gloves

Gloves give your hands protection in case of a crash or burn. Gloves also prevent slipping or losing grip of the handle bar because of sweat or moisture during rain. Gloves give you maximum grip, thus increasing performance and safety.

MX Pants

MX pants are different from normal pants that you wear. They are made from special fabrics that are sometimes fire proof, too. They are not easy to tear and can withstand impacts and crashes, thus protecting the rider’s legs from injuries.

Jersey

Jerseys are special t-shirts designed for motocross riders. These jerseys are made from special fabric that does not tear easily, thus protecting the rider in case of a crash. Some jerseys are even made from fire proof materials to give maximum protection.

Boots

Boots with non-slip soles are another important feature of the motocross apparel. The rider needs maximum grip on the foot holds and pedals to give maximum control over the bike. Accidents can happen if, by mistake, the foot slips and the bike swivels out of control.

According to the Transportation For America and the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership, the most dangerous U.S. city to ride a bicycle in is Orlanda, Florida. In fact, the top 10 most dangerous U.S. cities to ride in are all located in the South.

The most dangerous state to cycle in is also Florida with 119 bicycle related fatalities in 2007. California was a close second with 109 deaths. So, if you’re planning a long bike trip either avoid or head towards these states — depending on whether your goal is to seek danger.

The most dangerous street in the world to bicycle on is Coroico Road. Located in the Bolivian Andes, this is considered the steepest and bumpiest road around. The road plunges down almost 3,600 meters or 2.25 miles. It has been said that bikers can reach speeds of near 80km/hr without trying.

The most dangerous bike trail is found on the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. There is a 600 foot drop down to the Atlantic Ocean, with ledges that are sometimes only four inches wide and gaps that are over four feet long.

And now for the real shocker. The most dangerous place to ride your bike isn’t half a world away, it’s just outside your door. The sidewalk is considered by most cyciists the most dangerous place to ride a bike.

The sidewalk is hazardous because there is a greater chance of colliding with another cyclist or a pedestrian. Collisions with a car are more common too because drivers aren’t watching the sidewalk and bikers ride down curbs and driveways without looking. Not only is sidewalk cycling twice as dangerous than cycling in the street but it becomes four times as dangerous to cycle when you are going against traffic.

If you plan on seeking out extreme biking conditions, keep these important safety tips in mind. Always wear a helmet. Ride in the same direction as traffic, never against it. Obey the rules of the road. And, stay aware of your surroundings. Good rides!
