Check the Saddle Height

Sitting on the bike make sure your saddle is at the correct height for your size. The right height would be when the bike is stopped and you are sitting on it your toes and ball of the foot just barely touch the ground.

I use about 180 calories biking for 30 minutes and about 270 calories jogging for 30 minutes so I would say I spend 50% more calories jogging.

You need to adjust the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur. Cables tend to stretch more when new so it usually takes a turn or two of the adjuster. Try 1/2 turn counter clock wise at a time and try it. Do not adjust any of the screws, once set they never need adjustment.

My bike gears keep shifting late, and going out of gear?

I just bought a used TREK 830 mountain bike with a shimano 21 speed. It rides alright, but the only problem is somtimes when shifting (paddle shifter) it takes some gear grinding to shift into gear. Also when I stand up to pedal hard the bike goes out of gear and into another gear. How do I fix this?

It is a simple shifter cable adjustment. There is a barrel adjuster where the cable enters the rear derailleur. It will have little nubs on it and it screws in and out.

If it is shifting late going into a lower gear turn it out 1/2 turn. If the bike shifts into a higher gear when you pedal hard turn it out 1/2 turn.

If the shift is late going into a higher gear or it shifts to a lower gear under hard pedaling turn it in 1/2 turn.

When it is close to shifting correctly 1/4 turn will fine tune it.

Cleaning and lubing your shift cables will also help.

Do not adjust any of the screws on the derailleur.

Destination Bike Riding How to Easily Transport Your Bicycles

For a couple of years, I lived in Redondo Beach, CA, about two miles from the beach. One of my favorite weekend pastimes entailed me riding from my place to the beach on my beach cruiser, and then heading north on the bike path for miles and miles. I would pass through Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and even made it up to El Segundo a couple of times. My goal was eventually to make it all the way up to Santa Monica and back, but I didn’t live up there long enough to make that happen.

How can I work out my lower body by biking?

I do my upper body at the gym, but the idea of going to the gym 7 days a week just doesn’t fly with me. Can I do intense bike rides to build my lower body? If so, what should I do? What kind of biking and how long? I have a mountain bike with all the gears and stuff and other proper equipment. What should I do? Thanks, I appreciate it.

If you’re looking for strength training you want to do hills and sprinting in high gears. Steep short hills like often found on mountain trails is great. On the road find a hilly area, or if you must do 1 hill over and over. Ride steep and or in a high gear it will replicate reps in the gym. Road riding allows more control of your work out. If you have no hills sprint very hard in high gears for 15 to 30 seconds followed by a couple minutes rest and repeat. Sounds like the gym doesn’t it? Legs need longer and more reps than the upper body. 3 times a week for 30 minutes or so will do it. If you have the energy you can do same day as upper body too. Finally, keep your RPMs lower than 80, read high gears, this works the legs but good.

The Thrill Of Group Motorcycle Riding

Have you ever been on a group motorcycle ride before?  If you have, then you know about the feeling you get when you’re cruising down the highway with a dozen or so of your close riding buddies and all you can smell is the exhaust from the other bikes in front of you.  Or the rush you get when you all leave a small town and hammer on the throttle, roaring out of town, as if to say, “We were here!”  

It’s true, group motorcycle riding can be an exhilarating experience and can provide for hours of great riding and camaraderie with your friends.  But it can be a dangerous activity if the proper safety precautions are not met and if members of the group are riding unsafely.  A group motorcycle ride can be successful if each person participating in the ride acts responsibly and without carelessness.  

Organizing a group ride should only be left in the hands of one or two individuals.  This will help to prevent the ride form getting too much input and not enough decision making on which routes are taken and when and where stops will occur.  The trip should be planned out beforehand so that there is a set route in place and there isn’t any question about where the ride is going.  Stops should also be planned ahead of time in order to keep the ride on track and on schedule.  Stopping too many times or out of schedule will cause the ride to take longer, thus possibly having to alter the route and scheduled stops.  Those individuals that are organizing the ride should also be the ones to lead it since they are the ones that know which turns to make and where to stop.  A simple rule of thumb is if you don’t know where you’re going, don’t get out in front.  

I’ve been on a number of group rides and I’ve learned a great deal each time I’ve gone out with a group.  One thing I’ve learned is that is important to stick together as much as possible.  This includes waiting at stop signs, or pulling off to the side, while the others catch up if they’ve fallen behind.  What’s the point of going on a group ride if you’re always going to be separated and not stick together?  I’ve also learned that each rider is unique and it’s important to realize that you’re not always going to be able to keep up with each other.  If you feel you are riding too fast for your own comfort, then it’s better to fall back a little and catch up at the next stop sign than to ride out of your comfort zone and possibly get in an accident because you couldn’t handle yourself properly.

Finally, always be sure you are properly equipped for the ride which means having a proper motorcycle helmet, jacket, boots, pants, and other riding gear.  The thrill of the ride won’t be as great if you are not properly equipped.  You’ll be much more comfortable on your ride knowing that you’ll be protected in the event of a crash.

The group motorcycle ride can be an exciting experience and if it is lead properly, well organized, and ridden respectfully, it can be very rewarding for all of those involved.  So sit back and enjoy the ride!
