Tips For Buying the Right Mountain Bike

Despite the fact that buying a mountain bike should be a clearly easy decision considering the simplicity of the fundamental design, you will want to invest in a good quality bike with a nice frame and proper components. This article will guide you about choosing the right mountain bike.

Selecting the right mountain bike is more than looking at its style and features. It is all about riding it and to be comfortable while maintaining its control. Here are few things to seek when finding a right bike. The four main factors that you should take into considerations while making your decision are type of riding you have in mind to do, your budget range, fit and size and the last where to buy?

First decide which type of suspension do you want rigid, full suspension or hard tail? Rigid bikes have a solid frame and no suspension. These are usually the lightest in weight and work alright for smoother trails but they will give you a shaky ride on a rough trail. The full suspension bikes have suspension on the both front and rear fork of the frame. They offer you a smooth ride and the most control but they are usually quite expensive and heavy. The most popular mountain bikes are hard tail. They have suspension on the front fork of frame and have a rigid rear fork. Hard tail mountain bikes provide a good balance between control and weight.

To enjoy a riding you need to ride a good quality bike but if you cannot afford it then you should get the best that you can afford. Entry-level bikes can cost you about $250-$300 and high-end ones can cost you as much as $5000. As a beginner hard tail is usually the best in terms of parts and price.

Size is also one of the most important things that you should consider while buying a mountain bike. The frame of mountain bike is much smaller than frame of average road bike. Try to get a mountain bike frame that is approximately 3-4 inches smaller in size than your road bike. The frame of the mountain bike is very important since comfort and your ability to ride will depend on it. Make sure that the saddle will fit to the proper height. You can also choose some added features.

Choosing the Right Bike Racks for Cars at the Best Price

There are so numerous pick when it comes to buying bike racks for cars. Here are some beneficial new ideas on how to choice a right bike rack at the best price available today.

There are 3 kind of bike racks for cars these days: the roof rack, the trunk mounted rack (sometimes called strap racks), and the hitch rack.

There are benefits and negatives to each. There are also ways to get your chosen bike rack for a great price-if you know how. You will learn all of that here.

Roof Bike Racks

The positives of a roof rack include: freeing up the rear and trunk area of your car so you can have access to this area. The roof bike rack has also always been status symbol. If you transport your bike on your roof-you are a serious cyclist.

The downside to roof racks is that it can be cumbersome to lift your bike way above your car top at the end of a long ride or grueling race. Because some vehicles are getting taller this can be especially difficult. It can also be a problem when you are tired and forget your bike is up there and drive into a low ceiling area. Ouch!

Another negative to the roof rack system is that a bike transported there creates extra drag for the car and that reduces your gas mileage. Plain and simple, it will cost you more in gas to transport your bike on the roof vs. at the rear of the car.

Trunk Mount Bike Racks

Trunk mounted bike racks can be great for short trips. They make transporting your bike quick and easy. There are many new designs out there today that allow you to attach and detach your bike quickly. Your bike transported at the rear of the car is also protected from debris that can hit and damage a bike on the roof.

On the negative side is the obvious-you lose access to your trunk or rear entry area of your vehicle. That’s why these types of bike carriers are recommended for short trips.

Hitch Mount Bike Racks

Hitch mount bike racks are becoming increasingly popular today-even with serious cyclists. There are some designs that swing out of the way so you can access the rear entry areas of your vehicle. One company has a design that serves a dual function. It can be taken off quickly and used as a bike storage rack in your home or apartment or work.

Of course you need a hitch receiver on your vehicle to use this type of bike carrier it must be either 2 inch or 1.25 inch.

The benefits of hitch racks are similar to the trunk versions-better protection and increased gas mileage. However, they can be more stable and secure than their trunk counterparts.

How do you fix a bike gear?

My sister and her friend broke my bike. I don’t know how. There’s something sticking out (more like sticking downward) from the gear holding the chain on the back wheel, and that has caused the chain to loosen, making it so I can’t ride my bike. I’ve tried to push that up and back where it is supposed to go, but its not working. How can I fix it?

Answer
You don’t fix it yourself. You take it to your friendly local bike shop, where they have the tools, parts, and expertise to fix it.

When you shift “up” a gear on a bike the chain moves up the front gears but down the rear gears. Why is that?

With a bike gear setup there are two gears; one large gear at the front of the bike , and one small gear at the rear. When you shift “up” (when you make it harder to pedal) the the chain moves up the front gears but down the rear gears. Why is that? Shouldn’t they both move in the same direction?

Answer
The “size” of the gear is determined by the ratio of the number of teeth on the front chainring to the number of teeth on the rear cog. For instance, if you have the chain on a 44 tooth chainring and a 22 tooth cog, the rear wheel will make two complete revolutions for every one revolution of the pedals. Whereas if you have the chain on a 32 tooth chainring and a 32 tooth cog, the rear wheel will only make one revolution for each revolution that the pedals make. Now, obviously, spinning the rear wheel twice involves more work than spinning it once.

If you move from fewer teeth to more teeth (a bigger chainring) in the front while keeping the rear the same, the back wheel will spin more which means more work. On the other hand, if you move from more teeth to fewer teeth (a smaller cog) on the rear while keeping the front the same, the rear will spin more which means more work.

Is a Fixed Gear Bike and a Road Bike Different?

IF they are different, Do Fixed gear bikes cost more?
whats the difference?

im thinking about getting another.

Answer
A fixed gear bike may or may not be a road bike. Traditionally, most of them are, but fixed gear mtn bikes and cyclo-cross type bikes have recently become more popular and are probably more common. Fixed gear bikes were originally mainly designed for velodrome racing where braking is not as important and allowed for trackstands to be done, etc. They have now spread to the other branches of cycling. Cyclists sometimes use fixed gear bikes as an alternative method of training.

The cost is usually less, but they are generally harder to find. Your selection will be less with a fixed gear.

The difference between the two is that on a fixed gear bike, the pedals rotate at all times, even when “coasting”. To brake, one puts reverse pressure on the pedal stroke. It is possible to install normal hand-brakes as well, though most don’t come this way originally. Fixed gear track frames normally are not set up to accomodate hand brakes and don’t have the brake mounting bosses on the frame and fork..

Note that this is different than a single-speed or “coaster” type bike, that does allow you to stop pedalling, but only has one gear.

Of course, with a fixed gear bike one has only one choice of gear, so hills can be a problem.

Finding the Right Mountain Bike Frame

Your very first ride down the steep slopes of a bona fide mountain on a rock strewn trail on an old bike will undoubtedly leave you convinced to the necessity of purchasing a strong and resilient mountain bike frame! It, as your body will attest, is going to absorb a lot of shock. If you invest in a good mountain bike frame, it will do even more: it will actually absorb, into its metal and components, much of the shock that would otherwise move readily into your own components!

Design and construction of mountain bike frames has advanced centuries in the last couple of decades, really. What is available today only remotely resembles the first so-called mountain bikes some of us rode in the early nineteen-eighties. Today, mountain bike frames are available in geometries and materials unimagined two decades ago. What you need is going to be a combination of your own body and your individual intentions. If you like the thrill of high speed downhill rides, you will need a vastly different bike than if you ride on level trails. If your preference is to avoid going over rocks, you will need a different bike than someone whose eyes light up at the sight of a boulder strewn pathway. Think about what you enjoy before you go shopping for a mountain bike.

Mountain bike frames spend a lot of time on roads these days, too. Most of the bikes seen around town seem to be mountain bikes or some hybrid of the mountain bike. Fact is, mountain bikes are made for comfort. What they add to genuine off-road riding (shock absorption, easy gearing, and responsive handling) may be essential but what they add to street riding (shock absorption, easy gearing, and responsive handling) is no less appreciated by the casual rider. You will even find mountain bike riders on most any of the long, multi-day road tours so increasingly popular. You will not, probably, find these riders among the front pack though: a mountain bike frame is not made for efficient road usage, even if it does add comfort.

Getting a mountain bike frame that’s right for you is possible either in person at a good bike store or online if you know your size and usage requirements, but the vastly different frame geometries make riding a bike before buying it more important than ever. The traditional triangular structure of a road bike frame is frequently drastically skewed on today’s mountain bike frames, rendering the triangle almost unrecognizable. Shopping at a good bike store will put you in touch with bike professionals who will be able to recommend the right geometry for your unique physique and your own unique preferences and strengths as a rider.

What are the benefits of biking, as opposed to jogging?

I used to jog at a track, but it is too much of a hassle to get there, so I decided to ride a bike. But I’m wondering, does anyone have any idea if riding a bike is any better or worse exercise than jogging?

To me it seems that they are both just as good as one another for your legs, and the only difference is the upper body motion that you get from jogging but not biking.

Thoughts?

Answer
Cycling is concidered to be “low Impact” Since you are pedaling on a set sprocket it is easier on your joints. In Jogging there is a lot of jarring ground contact that can eventualy cause varrying forms of joint dammage.

Both are very good for cardiovascular (blood flow) improvement.

What do the gear changes in my bike mean?

Ok I just bought a bike with gear changes. It has 7 changes. And on the other side it has an L and an H.

I always have it set to 7 and L.

What do all these gear changes mean?

Answer
You probably bought a Mountain Bike. A 7-Speed to be exact. Okay, the 7 changes are to help minimize the strength needed to peddle. So, for example, if you were to go riding up a hill, the best gear to be on would be 1, because it requires less strength to peddle. Once you’re on top of the hill, you can change it to 7 to go faster. Remember, the higher the gear, the heavier the peddling, the faster you go. As for the L and H, L probably stands for Low and H probably stands for High. Every mountain bike has two types of gear changers. One on one side, the other on the other side. If you switch it to L you will probably have an easier time peddling.

Picking The Right Motorcycle For Your Child

You decide that it’s time for your child to join you riding around town and at your home. You go into the motorcycle gear shop and find the perfect one, but is it really? How can you be sure that your kid will even like it?

When you go to the motorcycle gear store, you may see tons of bikes for any age, but which one is really right for your kids? You may not know when you get in there which one you should pick. This can sometimes be a hard choice. You will have dirt bikes and some smaller cruising bikes to pick from.

If you are able to, you should bring your kid with you. This will help you because then you will know which one they like. If they are older, you will probably be spending more money on their bike. Smaller kids in the age range of 3 – 9 years will be able to go with the smaller bikes easier and without hurting themselves so much or the bike itself.

Kids will also be interested in the color of the bike. This is what they will think about the most because they want their friends to be impressed and love what they got. You will have to deal with this as the parent and help them find one that may be the right size in the color that they really want. Getting a bike that is to big will be hard for them to drive and they may even get hurt with it. That’s not what you want from the bike itself, after you spend the money that you do on these things.

You also need to help your child get the right kind of motorcycle gear for their needs, because you want them to be safe when they are riding one their bike. You don’t want to have to take them to the hospital with any kind of injury because of negligence.

You should consider all of these things when you are getting a motorcycle for your kids. I need to find a good fixed-gear bike for cheap. Is there one around 2 to 3 hundred?

I’m looking for a cheap but well worth it fixed gear bike for a beginner. $300 is preferred.

Answer
Bikes Direct has one for $300. Schwinn has a bike called the Cutter for under $300.
